1.Increase teacher confidence and ability to teach effectively online as part of blended learning
2.Reduce workloads (for the person(s) setting it up and those taking part)
3.Run all the activities using the app’s content and features (no searching around)
4.Personalise the learning for each educators context (no one size fits all)
5.Meets professional standards (no forms to fill)
6.Meet the learning needs of students
Nice n easy one this. Use the downloadable video and activity sheet below to introduce the HOW2 app to educators new to your organisation (or to HOW2s)
Maybe use the Groups feature to buddy up the new staff member with an experienced colleague and or put all newbies into a group with a coach or mentor?
The activities in this document are designed to help you get to know the HOW2 app in a way that evidences professional learning and dovetails with current professional teaching standards.
Background.
You can use most of the techniques on the app as part of online teaching. But how? During the lockdown, we created the online equivalents of some of the original HOW2s to illustrate. More are on the way. This exercise will support you to adapt techniques for online use.
Description
A three-step process eases you into considering how to adapt face-to-face teaching techniques for use online.
Step 1
Take a look at iTransform (online version) and the original iTransform technique. What are the subtle changes? Identify the differences and support each other in considering how you might apply the technique into your curriculum area(s)
Step 2
Now take a look at another online HOW2 technique and compare it with its equivalent HOW2s face-to-face technique. Again what are the subtle changes? Identify the differences and support each other in considering how you would apply them into your subject areas.
Step 3
Now take a look at a technique which isn’t (yet) in the online collection that, if it were to be adapted for use online would support you in meeting the learning needs of your students.
A couple of things.
Maybe do this in groups of 2 or 3, maybe 4. Use the Groups feature to create your group — this will mean any notes can more easily be shared. And remember the notes feature will push messages to email.
There are benefits to be had by working with colleagues from the same and different curriculum areas. Maybe on balance, start off working with your curriculum peers. As ever you need to decide what works best for you.
Description
Individuals learn techniques to overcome identified barriers to learner progress.
Method
Review the Barriers to Progress questions in the main Library Click through to the HOW2 solutions on any questions that ring any bells or connect to your experience.
Repeat until you have either finished reviewing all the questions or have around 5 or 6 HOW2s that you are considering.
Now take a close look at each of the HOW2s that you are considering. You are looking for one that you are comfortable to try.
Description
Individuals, in turn, deliver short presentations explaining how they have used a specific technique(s) to overcome a learning need aka barrier to progress. Run as a whole organisation activity or in faculties or cross-curricular groups.
Optional
Different groups work on different themes. (Use the Groups feature to create the groups)
Preparation.
Agree times and order of presentations in advance.
Description
Similar to above except your faculties take it in turns to share a range of HOW2s they have used to overcome specific barriers to learning.
Use the presentation mode to walk colleagues through how educators within your faculty have adapted the technique to your subject’s context.
Colleagues attending the presentation set the status of techniques they’d like to try to ‘Considering It’. When all the indications are complete, they choose one technique to add to their repertoire and set the status to this technique to ‘Working on It’
Recommended
Capture your learning to help colleagues. Publish notes to the whole organisation using the Notes feature.
Optional
Different groups work on different themes. (Use the Groups feature to create the groups)
Preparation.
Agree times and order of presentations in advance.
Note
For those of you with X‑college/school subscriptions, you can use the same method to connect educators from the same subject area who may work on different campuses or in different regions.
Description
Capture emerging best practice and offer support to colleagues
Method
Systematically review the HOW2s, I find using the Teaching Strategies Collection is best for this. As you browse check that you have set the Embedded status to techniques that you have already adopted into your practice. This will, via the Skills Exchange, alert your colleagues that there is someone (you) who can talk to them about how the technique works in practice.
Now go to the Skills Exchange. And find a colleague who is working on at least one of the techniques you have embedded. Use the Notes Feature to contact them to offer support (or point them to your recently written note)
Recommended
Capture your learning to help colleagues. Publish notes to the whole organisation using the Notes feature.
Description
Advanced practitioners or Coaches, or similar (APCs) use the HOW2s to lead themed workshops online. E.g. How to get students doing more and working with each other online.
Method
APCs run online presentation workshops on particular themes. Using the HOW2 presentation slides, as they go through the slides, they make suggestions as to use the techniques in the subject contexts of colleagues attending each workshop.
A schedule of workshops is prepared and shared in advance. Workshops may be mandatory or optional or a mixture.
Recommended
Use the Groups feature to create the groups attending each workshop.
Use the Nudge feature to share the content of the workshops in advance (flip the learning) and ask folk to consider how they might adapt the techniques suggested.
Background
All curriculum areas have textbooks. Increasingly these are accessible online. But how to use them effectively as part of the teaching sequence? So that learners are engaged, work meaningfully together, and on their own, both with and away from you — their teacher? It was with this question in mind that we created the HOW2 textbook collection.
Descripton
A quick and easy way to explore and extend the ways eTextbooks are used as part of the teaching sequence.
Method
Browse the HOW2 textbook collection and as you read the thumbnail descriptors set the status of any that grab your attention to ‘Considering It’. Next click through to those you are considering to take a detailed look. And then set the status of one or two you want to add to your practice to ‘Working on It’
Now, look at the Skills Exchange tab on the HOW2 you are going to use. You are looking for a colleague who has already set the ‘Embedded It’ status to the technique you will be using. Use the Notes feature to get in touch and ask for support. Alternatively, additionally, see if there is a colleague who is also working on the same technique and get in touch.
Background
Teaching online is hard. It’s been no mean feat getting to grips with the using Teams or Zoom or whatever your platform of choice is. Every educator everywhere needs to be applauded. Unfortunately getting to grips with the kit only takes us so far. Somebody could liken it to learning how to use a new food processor. Knowing how to use the equipment doesn’t mean we know how to cook a decent meal. That’s why we created the Using HOW2s ONLINE collection.
Description.
A quick and easy way to explore and extend the number of teaching techniques used to engage and motivate learners when teaching online.
Method
Browse the Using HOW2s ONLINE collection and as you read the thumbnail descriptors set the status of any that grab your attention to ‘Considering It’. Next click through to those you are considering to take a detailed look. And then set the status of one or two you want to add to your practice to ‘Working on It.’
Now, look at the Skills Exchange tab on the HOW2 you are going to use. You are looking for other colleagues who have also set the ‘Considering It’, ‘Working on It’ or ‘Embedded It’ status to the technique(s) you like. Use the Notes feature to get in touch and ask for or offer support.
Buddy up in pairs (use the Groups feature to give your pair or triad a name and make it easier to stay in touch) and use the Notes to chat.
