Invite your learners to be partners with you in planning and reviewing a HOW2 expedition — fine-tuning it together to expand your joint repertoire of class techniques
PinPoint and Plan: Identify the learning skills you want to develop in your learners. Judge their current capacity to collaborate in a partnership approach to teaching and learning.
Invite and Partner: Find a HOW2 that matches your assessment of the challenges. Then invite your learners to be partners in this HOW2 journey. Go through how you will proceed. And don’t forget to explain the benefits of learning in this way, alongside their teacher.
Show and Explain: Display the HOW2 infographic on the screen. Talk it through, step by step. Use Talk Partners to re-explain the steps to one another, checking for understanding.
Adapt and Agree: Get ideas from your learners about what they think might need changing — and why. Don’t forget to give your opinion too. Discuss and agree these adaptations for your first run-through.
Move and Monitor: Test-run your adapted HOW2. Make constant reference to the steps throughout the lesson to check that everyone agrees where they are. And ask your learners when they think they are ready to move on to the next step.
Review and Improve: Walk through the HOW2 infographic, asking your learners what worked well and what could do with further improvements. Discuss their ideas and reasons, arriving at agreed tweaks to the route for next time.
Routine and Repertoire: Once you’ve practised the HOW2 and tried out your tweaks, establish this latest version as a class regular. Just calling out its title will be enough for your learners to know what’s about to happen — and how.
HOW2s introduce a level of objectivity and shared understanding to Peer Observations that enhance the learning of both parties.
