What is the HOW2 Web app? How can it help faculty developers to support part-time and full-time faculty who may find it difficult to attend workshops? How can faculty use it to build networks and support each other? This page answers these questions and provides access to a preview account.
The Teaching HOW2s web app is an innovative 21st-century tool specifically designed to support full-time, and importantly part-time, faculty to develop their teaching expertise, build networks, and support each other within their own online professional learning community. HOW2s is different. So much so it’s much easier to explain what it can do if we show you. Here’s a one-minute introduction. (It really is a minute long)
HOW2s improve learning through better teaching.
Sally Dicketts CBE, Chair of the English Association of Colleges and CEO of Activate Learning — a group of 11 colleges based in Oxford, England.
The HOW2 web app provides immediate fingertip access to over 160 evidence-informed pedagogical solutions— bite-sized, aeroplane-safety-card type graphics make learning new ways to engage and motivate students a cinch. The video below introduces a set of social learning features that enable faculty to connect with and form groups to support each other, access support from faculty developers and share emerging best practice. Faculty developers use the same features to reach out and support faculty.
Note: The video does not reference faculty develops directly — in the UK many job titles assume this role (and it would make a lot of sense if colleges here did call them faculty developers! :)
Working remotely can make sharing ideas more difficult and HOW2 has allowed us access to a wide range [of ideas] which we can then share to colleagues, discuss with those who have tried it and gain advice from those working on it
Lauren Osborne, Teacher
The web app has large numbers of geographically dispersed teachers in mind. College networks like Activate Learning and NCG (the Newcastle College Group) extensively use it in the UK.
Damian Rollinson, an experienced HOW2 practitioner from London, will guide attendees through the app’s features and introduce them to six teaching techniques that will also be made available via a preview account. The preview account will be open for 30 days, allowing attendees to explore and navigate the platform independently.
Once you are logged in to the app you will be able to
• view an introductory set of six HOW2s in full
• explore the library and read descriptors of the remaining 140+ other HOW2s
• explore all the app’s social learning features
If you would like to see and use the onboarding video that our customers use to introduce the app to faculty new to it, we’ve placed it, along with a downloadable worksheet, below.
